Singing Through The Alphabet (for Kim)

During the school year, I am home alone quite a bit. At those times or while driving in the car by myself, I often let my mind dwell on situations or things that leave me feeling sad or angry. So, quite a few years ago I started what I call "singing through the alphabet". It helps me focus on the Lord. Since I grew up in a conservative, Baptist church, I know a lot of hymns and old choruses by heart, so I usually sing those, but the last few years I've added some more contemporary songs.

If you were a little mouse at my house last week, you would have seen me vacuuming/cleaning and singing (VERY LOUD) through the alphabet two times. The second time through, I try to sing a different song, but sometimes I can't think of one for that alphabet letter, so I just sing the same one. If I don't remember or know all the words, I sing the part that I do know. Sometimes I only know the chorus, and that's okay!

Once when the secretaries at North Valley Baptist Church went on a shopping trip to Medford, Oregon, I had them do this on the way home. We had sooo much fun.

Here's some of my favorites to sing:

  1. Thank you a million times over. I know that must have taken you some time to reproduce but I DO appreciate it so much. Love the XYZ especially. I am going to reprint this (with your permission of course) and use it myself. I'll let you know if I think of some other songs too!

Hope we can get together sometime before I go back to school....

  2. Loved your post about singing through the alphabet! I've done that many times (and have the same trouble with q and x). For a couple of years I was interim pastor of a church an hour and a half away. As I drove along, I'd either pray (with my eyes open!), or sing through the alphabet. For k, you might add "King of my life I crown Thee now" (Lead Me to Calvary). There is also a hymn called Keep on Believing in the Living Hymns hymnal, if you have access to a copy.

I came to your site because you included My Jesus I Love Thee under the l's. Today is the anniversary of William R. Featherstone's birthday in 1846. Take a look at my blog to see other hymn events for today.

God bless, and keep singing! (Robert)

  3. Haven't visited for awhile, but I'm glad to see you include the hymn "Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary," by my fellow-Canadian, John Moore, in your alphabetical list. He is 84 years old today.
